Aerial view of the Pulvermaar near Gillenfeld, Eifel, Germany. This nearly perfectly circlar diatreme with a diameter of 800-900 m is considered a classic example of a maar. The age of the maar is approx. 20 000 years, the lake is about 71 m deep. Crustal xenolithes are found in the surrounding pyroclastic ejecta which are exploited in a quarry, clearly visible in the lower part of the picture. Photo credit: Landesbildstelle Rheinland Pfalz.
